Haydn: Sinfonie Nr. 80

Humour, melancholy, rhythm – a concert full of contrasts and surprises
With more than 100 compositions to his name, the Viennese classic Joseph Haydn is considered the »father of the symphony«. In his works, he likes to surprise his audience with his distinctive sense of humor. We find this sense of humor, somewhat hidden, in his Symphony No. 80.
It begins with »Sturm und Drang« in dramatic minor. But then Haydn takes us by surprise with an almost naive Ländler that bursts into the orchestral turmoil, while the main theme of the rapid finale seems to sway as if drunk. At the beginning, Richard Strauss takes a wistful look back at the 19th century with the ethereal music of his string sextet from the opera »Capriccio«. After that, elegiac trumpet tones lead into the ‘hot’ jazz rhythms of Erwin Schulhoff's »Hot Sonata«.
