In our memory, all voices become inner voices, no matter whether they were originally real or always imaginary. The composer Marcus Schmickler from Cologne explores this subject with the help of »Denkwürdigkeiten eines Nervenkranken« (Memoirs of Mental Illness) – thus the title of a true and indeed memorable tract with which Daniel Paul Schreber, a leading judge at Dresden’s Appellate Court and the son of the founder of the typically German culture of allotment gardens named for him, successfully fought being declared incapacitated in 1907. Schmickler has transformed Schreber’s fantastical world view into a musical setting for chorus and instrumentalists. A psychosis within a systemic ensemble constellation? With the chorus representing the inner voices and a singing pianist in the role of Schreber? A compositional expedition to the border regions between madness and reality.
