Ich habe genug: Bach cantatas full of comfort and deep emotion
Death was omnipresent in the Baroque era. However, it was not only the end of life, but also the beginning of eternal life. The Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach also speaks of death as a welcome, familiar friend in his music.
The Thomaskantor's cantata of the same name begins with the moving words ‘Ich habe genug’ (‘I have enough’), shortly afterwards the ‘weary eyes’ fall asleep, and at the end death is greeted with an almost ecstatic aria. People at that time found comfort in their faith and in God, who redeemed the ‘poor sinners’. With this programme, Belgian singer Reinoud van Mechelen, with his warm and elegant tenor voice, and the ensemble he founded, a nocte temporis, continue their joint Bach journey.
