A symphonic universe: Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Marianne Crebassa with Mahler's Third
Gustav Mahler is undoubtedly part of the musical DNA of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. His Third Symphony is one of the longest symphonies in music history. He wanted to create an entire world with it, and in the end he conceived a symphonic cosmology on sheet music, with a view from our world into the beyond.
In this symphonic cosmos, flowers sway in the wind and the characteristic call of the cuckoo sounds. Later, humans enter this world in the mysterious solo for alto voice, entrusted here to French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa. But the impressive mountain ranges that surrounded Mahler while he was composing at Lake Attersee also resonate in this score. And from their peaks, it is only a small step to the song of the three angels in heaven, accompanied by the sound of six bells that are part of the huge orchestral ensemble.
