Jennifer Johnston | Gerald Finley | Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra | Klaus Mäkelä

From Dvořák to Bartók: Klaus Mäkelä and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra – between melody and the abyss
The abysses shine magnificently! Béla Bartók immersed the dark myth of ‘Bluebeard's Castle’, as disturbing as it is compelling, in magical tones. With the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the evocative fin-de-siècle sound becomes an auditory experience.
At the helm of Amsterdam's prestigious orchestra is its designated chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä. Having long since matured from a prodigious young conductor to a powerful figure, he tackles great works with fearless abandon. In Bartók's sensual horror thriller, he guides star baritone Gerald Finley as the sinister Bluebeard and the impressive Jennifer Johnston as Judith, who is wasting away with love through the dark soundscapes. No less weighty and dark is the concert's opening with Dvořák's 7th Symphony: sensitive, exciting, melodious.
