Chicago Symphony Orchestra | Klaus Mäkelä

Schostakowitsch | Sibelius
A conductor (Klaus Mäkelä) leads an orchestra (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) in a concert hall. Musicians play violins, cellos, and other instruments. The stage is elegantly lit.

A portrait of the soul and a musical memorial: Sibelius’ Seventh & Shostakovich’s Fourth

Deeply felt, grandly conceived: musical magic is in the air when Klaus Mäkelä raises his baton. With the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, of which he will soon be chief conductor, the rising star presents a sublime and moving programme.

Klaus Mäkelä, a young star who has long since come of age, dedicates himself as musical ambassador to his Finnish homeland with Jean Sibelius's last symphonic work. Sibelius's wistful and gripping Seventh seems to consist of only one movement, but proves to be a multifaceted portrait of the soul. It is followed by Dmitrij Schostakowitsch's expressive Fourth Symphony – once cancelled by the Soviet dictatorship as too bold! – a musical monument and resounding memorial to the last century.
