WDR Happy Hour – Pioniere

WDR Sinfonieorchester | John Storgårds
Two musicians walk down a street, smiling. One carries a cello, the other has a violin.

This »WDR Happy Hour«, conducted by the Finnish maestro John Storgårds, is dedicated to pioneers of very different kinds. One true trailblazer was the American jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. In his Elegy for Violin and Strings, he reflects on the love of his Hungarian grandmother. The two tone poems by the Swiss composer Ernest Bloch unfold poetic atmospheres — from quiet winter to blossoming spring. In Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland, one of the leading figures of American modernism, tells the touching story of young farmers in the green hills of the Appalachians around 1800.
