Rameau Decolonised: Baroque meets K.R.U.M.P., hip-hop and modern energy

Dance is central to French Baroque opera, and Jean-Philippe Rameau, its most important protagonist, celebrated triumphs with a subject that gave rise to particularly magnificent, exotic dances: Les Indes Galantes. It tells four love stories from the Ottoman Empire, Peru, Persia and North America. The piece was consistently decolonised in 2019 at the Opéra Bastille in Paris: choreographer Bintou Dembélé brought urban street dances such as K.R.U.M.P. and hip-hop to the stage to accompany the stylish performance of Cappella Mediterranea. The defining Rameau production of recent years is now coming to Cologne as a choreographed concert.
