Musical Chameleons
Inspired by American jazz and Mozart, Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major opens with a whip-crack before taking on a sensational chameleon-like quality that is creative, colourful and capricious. The concerto also demands extraordinary virtuosity, making it the perfect piece for multi-talented Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino.
A chameleon in his own right, Hayato loves adapting to different musical styles. He effortlessly and elegantly disregards traditional expectations and feels musically at home wherever he happens to be. He welcomes life outside the comfort zone of classical music and has also become a successful pop star. His passion and dedication to both genres have earned him some 1.5 million followers on YouTube. In November 2025, he even became a Guinness World Record holder after playing in front of 18,846 fans at the largest ever indoor piano recital.
