Tenor meets fortepiano: Schubert's song cycle »Die schöne Müllerin« in an intimate sound
Schubert's famous song cycle »Die schöne Müllerin« (The Beautiful Miller Girl) with a prominent cast: tenor Julian Prégardien meets keyboard poet Kristian Bezuidenhout. The instrument of choice is a fortepiano with its quieter, more melodious sound. We have never heard Schubert's song cycle like this before!
Around 200 years ago, Franz Schubert created the first narrative song cycle of the Romantic period: »Die schöne Müllerin«. He certainly did not have the sound of the voluminous Steinway grand piano in mind, but rather the more transparent colour of the fortepiano. Singer Julian Prégardien and pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout opted for this instrument – and suddenly an enormously broad range of expression and dynamics became possible, allowing the intimate chamber music origins of the song cycle to be experienced anew.
