Anniversary concert: 40 years of Kölner Philharmonie

Anniversary Concert: 40 Years of the Kölner Philharmonie – monumental music, joined forces
Four decades of musical excellence: Forty years ago, on 14 September 1986, the Kölner Philharmonie was opened with a programme of Romantic classics and contemporary music.
The anniversary concert ties in with these beginnings, featuring Mendelssohn's »Reformation Symphony« with its solemn chorale at the end and the monumental sunrise at the beginning of Strauss' famous tone poem »Thus Spoke Zarathustra«, as well as the concert piece »ad absurdum« by contemporary composer Jörg Widmann. The two major Cologne orchestras, the WDR Sinfonieorchester and the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, which was already present at the festive opening concert 40 years ago, are joining forces for this occasion. Cologne's General Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada provides the necessary overview of this enormous ensemble.
