Hans Zender: Schuberts »Winterreise«

200 Years of »Winterreise«: Julian Prégardien and Zender’s new version
When what is probably the most famous song cycle in music history meets one of the best song singers of our time, it sounds like a perfect match. Especially when Julian Prégardien brings Schubert's Winterreise into the here and now.
The harrowing story of inner despair and the journey into isolation will be exactly 200 years old in 2027. In a ‘composed interpretation’, as he calls his new version of the cycle, Hans Zender overcomes this historical distance and listens to the romantic songs with the ears of the late 20th century: with expressive sounds, dynamic extremes, wind machines and rain sheets. The Ensemble Modern already performed the work at its premiere in Frankfurt in 1993, with Christoph Prégardien, Julian's father, singing the tenor part.
