Almost 300 years have passed since the premiere of Georg Friedrich Händel opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto in London. Premiered in 1724, this dramma per musica became the most successful of his 42 operas. The rich instrumentation, colourful vocal lines and complex plot lines drew rapturous applause from the audience. After its rediscovery in the 1920s alone, the opera was performed over 220 times. To this day, it remains one of Handel's most popular works. The composer adapted one of the most passionate love stories in history, the liaison between Cleopatra and the Roman general Julius Caesar, which was not without political calculation. On 1 November at 7 p.m., Giulio Cesare will be performed with Cecilia Bartoli in the role of Cleopatra. Listen to the podcast with Christoph Vratz.
