No year draws to its end without the strains of waltzes! And this year’s New Year Concert is sure to accompany the public into the evening in three-quarter time. Leaving aside all clichés, under the leadership of its principal conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the WDR Symphony Orchestra presents a series of particularly charming and artistic specialities. Two delightful waltzes from the pen of Antonín Dvořák are followed by the equally graceful and humorous Liebeslieder by Johannes Brahms. Born in Hamburg but Viennese by choice, Brahms was inspired by the popular choral waltzes of Johann Strauss – romantic vocal art of the highest order, performed by the WDR Radio Chorus. It is joined by the excellent piano duo Gülru Ensari & Herbert Schuch, which also devotes itself to Francis Poulenc’s amazingly brilliant and luxuriant Concerto for Two Pianos. Maurice Ravel’s La Valse, the apotheosis of all waltzes, poised exquisitely on the edge of the abyss, provides the breath-taking finale.
