“Yes, indeed, it is a love story,” Riccardo Muti describes his relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic. It was in 1971 that the Italian star conductor first stood on the podium to lead this noble ensemble. In all the years since he was entrusted not only with conducting the legendary New Year’s concerts five times, but also the concert marking the 150th anniversary of the orchestra’s founding. Furthermore he was elected as an honorary member. Muti’s interpretations of Mozart with the Viennese orchestra are counted among the highlights – in concert or in opera – in the history of interpretation. This will be demonstrated once again in their joint concert at Cologne’s Philharmonie, featuring Mozart’s enchanting Flute Concerto No. 1 (played by Karl-Heinz Schütz, the orchestra’s principal flutist). This lucid masterpiece of Austrian classicism is followed by Anton Bruckner’s impressive Seventh Symphony, which mourns the death of Richard Wagner, ending in impressive transfiguration – a milestone of late romanticism.
