1995 ging ein Beben durch die Musikpresse: Der gerade mal 24 Jahre alte Thomas Adès hatte die Oper »Powder her Face« auf die Bühne gebracht, die satirisch das extravagant-ausschweifende Leben einer Upper-Class-Dame beschreibt. Adès etabliert einen Musikstil, der spielend zwischen Avantgarde und ironisch gebrochenen Zitaten von Älterem wechselt und zugleich Eingängigkeit mit großer Fantasie kombiniert. Sergej Rachmaninows »Sinfonische Tänze« hingegen sind ein Abschiedswerk: Hinter dem harmlosen Titel verbirgt sich eine ganze Sinfonie, ein eindrucksvolles Statement, das musikalisch Momente eines reichen Komponisten- und Virtuosenlebens Revue passieren lässt.

This is due to necessary evacuation measures in Cologne-Deutz and Cologne's historic city centre following the discovery of a bomb from the Second World War. The defusing is scheduled for Wednesday morning and will require a large-scale closure of the city centre, which will also affect the Cologne Philharmonic Hall as well as local and long-distance public transport. As the closure is expected to last the whole day, it is currently not possible to guarantee that the concert will take place safely and as planned.
