»Love at second sight«
»I particularly love the Elgar concerto«, Sol Gabetta confessed in an interview in 2023. The colours, the melodiousness – the wit and liveliness that flash up again and again in surprising ways: for the star cellist, everything is just right here.
Yet the work had a rather bumpy start to its musical life: a poorly rehearsed premiere in 1919 damaged its reputation, which was only overwhelmingly restored in 1965 by the very young Jacqueline du Pré. Today, the passionate concerto with its moving cello part – from the very first note – is one of the most beloved. The same applies to Mendelssohn's Fourth Symphony: his enthusiasm for Italy, which served as inspiration, runs through the entire work. Sunny, spirited and lively, it provides a great boost of energy at every performance.
