»John Coltrane 100«

In John Coltrane's anniversary year, the WDR Big Band and its principal conductor Bob Mintzer are turning their attention to the work of the pioneering saxophonist, who would have turned 100 on 23 September.

For the tribute concert »John Coltrane 100«, Chris Potter, a valued and welcome friend of the Big Band, will be coming to Cologne as a soloist. With technical precision and stylistic openness, Potter approaches Coltrane's work and at the same time gives it a personal, contemporary touch.

Bob Mintzer, who also performs as a soloist on the saxophone, has written new arrangements of selected Coltrane compositions for this evening, which make the influence of the musician of the century on modern jazz audible and present it from a 21st-century perspective.
