Gespenster und Fahnen

»I am an academic composer,« Gordon Kampe confessed a few years ago in his column for the Neue Musikzeitung, even »an enthusiastic one!«, as he emphasized, but not without a dose of irony, as we know, for that is one of his trademarks, whether as a composer or columnist, on paper or in scores. His »Gespenster und Fahnen« for chorus raises the expectation of multi-faceted sound colours, turbulent contractions and astounding punchlines. Is it likely to be academic? Or polemic? Be that as it may: »That is the nice thing about the Germans,« as Heinrich Heine said: »No one is so crazy that he would fail to find someone even more crazy to understand him.« In this spirit, the great Peter Eötvös set this and two further aphorisms by the romantic cynic for a-cappella chorus. A perfect start for a concert full of humour and wit.
