Helmut Lachenmann zum 90. Geburtstag

Setting off into the unknown

»Composing means building an instrument« – a slogan, a solution from Helmut Lachenmann. The tools for this are not saws, files or hammers, but familiar (orchestral) instruments. And these can do much more than just produce pure tones. Their sound bodies also contain and unfold rattling, hissing, creaking, whispering and crunching. An incredibly colourful palette of new colours, instrumental noises and gripping gestures, shaped into adventurous landscapes with rugged and beguiling areas, with a broken and at the same time suspended heritage (from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven). Lachenmann's daring, exciting, bitingly cheerful, thoroughly musical sound world is the result of scrupulous reflection on music, its history and its conditions, on what music is and should be today: a departure into the unfamiliar.
