Rebecca Saunders: Yes

Juliet Fraser | Ensemble Musikfabrik | Enno Poppe
A free-floating, high-octane stream of thoughts and language between waking and sleep – how can music react to Molly Bloom’s famous monologue, the final chapter of James Joyce’s »Ulysses«? Rebecca Saunders’ spatial performance »Yes« is certainly not a conventional »setting«, in which the soprano would embody Molly, accompanied by the instrumentalists. Many of the ensemble members, who are spread around the space, also speak or whisper fragments of the text, sometimes clearly audible, sometimes blurring into the overall sound. It almost seems as if all the performers, and the audience with them, are at the centre of cross-firing neurons, i.e. inside the protagonist’s head, surrounded by all her feelings, memories, wishes and reflections. A stream of consciousness and sound to lose oneself in…
