Masterpieces – Seong-Jin Cho & Manfred Honeck

Seong-Jin Cho | WDR Sinfonieorchester | Manfred Honeck
A smiling conductor in a tuxedo stands before an orchestra. Warm lighting creates a festive atmosphere.

The Viennese composer Thomas Daniel Schlee was unable to complete his Third Symphony: he died in November 2025. Manfred Honeck, who was closely associated with the composer, opens the concert with this symphonic fragment and closes with Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, the Pastoral. Beethoven, a city dweller, drew inspiration from nature in the countryside and placed this work impressively between symphony and programme music. In between, Sergei Rachmaninoff's virtuoso Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra sparkles, interpreted by star pianist Seong-Jin Cho, who won the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2015 and has since performed with the world's most important orchestras.
