Leuchtstoffraum 1 – The Kleinmann-Low Nebula

Heinrich-Böll-Platz

    Volker Ossenkopf-Okada | Julian Rohrhuber

»Leuchtstoffraum 1« is the product of interdisciplinary collaboration between Julian Rohrhuber, a professor at the Düsseldorf Music Academy, and the astrophysicist PD Dr. Volker Ossenkopf-Okada, who teaches in Cologne.

Their interest is focused on a comparatively tiny region of Orion, the Kleinmann-Low Nebula, a region with exceedingly high star-forming activity. The electromagnetic radiation emitted by this dense molecular cloud includes hundreds of thousands of different frequencies. These cosmic signals provide the material for an extraordinary electronic composition on the Heinrich-Böll-Platz, the roof of Cologne’s Philharmonie. A project whose origins go back 1,300 years and which connects Cologne directly with the depths of the universe.
