KölnChor

Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem
A large orchestra and a choir (KölnChor) performs before a full audience in a modern concert hall (Kölner Philharmonie) with striking architecture and ambient lighting.

A work to comfort those »die da Leid tragen«

In collaboration with the Groot Concertkoor Amsterdam, the KölnChor performs one of the most beautiful – and comforting – works dealing with death, grief, loss and transience: Johannes Brahms’ »A German Requiem«.

Brahms composed his famous work between 1865 and 1868, choosing not the liturgical Requiem text as his basis, but selecting biblical texts himself for this deeply personal work: »As far as the text is concerned, I must confess that I would quite gladly omit the word ‘German’ and simply substitute ‘human’.« The result was a work intended to comfort »those who mourn«, that is, music imbued with solemnity, dignity and confidence for the living.
