Jerusalem Quartet: Schostakowitsch-Zyklus

Schostakowitsch's cycle of 15 quartets is a highlight of the repertoire. The Jerusalem Quartet has been playing this deeply moving music for decades. Like no other ensemble, it explores the emotional depths of this most private of all the composer's works.
»The quartets form a kind of musical diary and are among the most personal, profound and emotionally intense works of the 20th century. They reflect Schostakowitsch’s struggle with Soviet censorship and oscillate between despair, defiance, sarcasm, coded resistance and unspeakable grief,« according to the Jerusalem Quartet.
Early and late works can be experienced in five concerts in varying combinations. In the finale of the cycle, the grande dame of the piano, Elisabeth Leonskaja, will also join in for the composer's only piano quintet.
