The Cologne choir scene: locally rooted, rich in tradition and musically diverse
Which city can organise its own concert series year after year with regional and local choirs alone? And one that can stand up to any international comparison! Cologne is truly privileged in this respect. As always, the programmes are extremely ambitious and varied.
One focus is on sacred works such as the requiems by Robert Schumann and Franz von Suppè, who was by no means only active as an operetta composer. The tragic and dramatic text of the Stabat Mater is also of Christian origin, and Josef Rheinberger's setting of it also hints at a trace of hope and redemption. Felix Mendelssohn's »Elias« leads us into the Old Testament, while his »Walpurgisnacht« takes us into pagan mysticism. Opera arias and choral pieces from Wagner to Verdi and Mascagni range thematically from the legendary to verismo. A broad spectrum, then, in which the Romantics are not the only ones setting the tone. Finally, there is Johann Sebastian Bach with his magnificent Mass in B minor, a widely acclaimed milestone of Christian-Western culture. Many bridges in Cologne may be dilapidated and the opera house may remain a construction site, but Cologne's choral scene is stable, long-lasting and of the highest standard.

Are you unable to attend an event included in your subscription? No problem. You can return a subscription concert date. In return, you will receive a Flex voucher for the proportionate value of the concert in relation to the total value of your subscription.
The return must be registered with the subscription service at least 14 days before the subscription concert date to be cancelled. After the return, you will receive a Flex voucher, which you can redeem flexibly until the end of the concert season for a ticket booking for a concert organised by KölnMusik.
