Touching voices, precise piano artistry – a musical journey through the ages
Singing is the most common form of music-making. And certainly the most primitive. It is familiar to all of us from early childhood. And that is precisely why every audience is immediately moved when something so everyday and universal is presented in its highest form, when trained voices such as those of sopranos Julia Lezhneva or Véronique Gens, tenor Julian Prégardien or contralto Wiebke Lehmkuhl unfold their radiance, embedded in the sensitive piano accompaniment of Alexander Melnikov, Julius Drake or James Baillieu, or even fortepiano specialist Kristian Bezuidenhout.
Pianist Götz Payer and soprano Sarah Wegener dedicate songs by Schubert and Schumann to their famous colleague Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient. ‘Revolution and Art’ is the title of the programme, based on a concept by musicologist Anno Mungen, who researched the role of the singer in the course of the Dresden May Uprising of 1849. Baritone Jonas Müller and Gerold Huber on the piano build a bridge between the worlds of the 18th and 19th centuries, from Bach to Schubert, and further still from the 17th to the 20th century, from Monteverdi to Frank Martin.
