Sergej Prokofjew called the string quartet »the most classical of all classical forms«, and indeed, two violins with a viola and cello form an ideal combination at the interface between tradition and avant-garde, complexity and transparency, sonority and intimacy. The annual subscription series featuring top international ensembles is one of the most popular of each season, and with good reason.
In addition to classics such as Mozart and Beethoven, the Romantics Schubert, Brahms and Tschaikowsky, and contemporaries Brett Dean and Samuel Adams, compositions from the first half of the last century will be a focal point of the programmes in the coming season. These include composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Sergei Rachmaninov, who sought refuge in the USA from the totalitarian regimes in their home countries. The Jewish composer Ruth Schonthal also managed to emigrate to Mexico via Sweden, while the Dutch half-Jew Henriette Bosmans was banned from working – and probably only escaped a worse fate by luck. The fear of Stalinist reprisals is reflected in the compositions of Dmitrij Schostakowitsch, but there was no longer any opportunity for this in the work of the multi-talented Erwin Schulhoff. He died in 1942 in the Wülzburg concentration camp.
