Christiane Karg | Håkan Hardenberger | Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra | Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Mahler | Widmann
Kölner Philharmonie
Jukka-Pekka Saraste: An man with gray hair and a beard, wearing a white shirt, sits in a rocky landscape.

Portrait Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Angelic sounds: at the end of Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, Christiane Karg sings a bell-like soprano solo about »Himmlische Leben« (heavenly life), and Håkan Hardenberger, a virtuoso trumpet player, sets out in search of paradise:

Towards Paradise is the title Jörg Widmann gave to his trumpet concerto, which strives for beauty and is brought to life by Hardenberger, the acclaimed performer of its premiere. And Jukka-Pekka Saraste explores it with the sonorous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. This orchestra, with its great Gustav Mahler tradition, has a special approach to his eerily light, enchantingly ironic Fourth Symphony.
