Basel Sinfonietta

Contemporary music performed by a symphony orchestra is the speciality of the Basel Sinfonietta. This evening's programme takes listeners on a journey through extraordinary soundscapes, rugged landscapes and unknown universes.

In ARCHORA, Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir not only traces the icy landscapes of her homeland, but also finds fascinating sounds for alien galaxies, as if from a science fiction epic, while Olivier Messiaen commemorates the victims of the two world wars with an ensemble of woodwinds, brass and percussion. With music that is sometimes religious, sometimes inspired by nature – in a soundscape sharpened by the absence of strings. In between is music that is very much in tune with the times, with a new work by Leo Dick, who, like the Basel Sinfonietta, comes from Basel.
