Einführung in das Konzert

The Adagietto from Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony is ethereal, heavenly music. It is said to have been a declaration of love to his young wife Alma. The symphony was premiered in 1904 at the Gürzenich in Cologne. Mahler's work ranges from energetic marching episodes to Viennese sounds and a exuberant dancing finale. It is a dramatic symphony that is perfectly suited to Cristian Măcelaru and the WDR Sinfonieorchster. Two works for cello and orchestra by Peter Tschaikowsky, including the famous »Rokoko Variationen« (Rococo Variations), also showcase Slavic romanticism.
