The Netherlands in Focus

What are the Netherlands' most important exports? Tulips, Gouda cheese and… top-flight musicians. But neighbouring Germany is not the biggest consumer for this third export, unlike for the others, because conductors such as Bernard Haitink (7 Feb and 10 Feb), violinists like Janine Jansen (15 Nov and 6 Feb), pianists like Ronald Brautigam (10 Feb) and orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (9 May) and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (27 Aug and 2 Jun) are massively sought-after guests on concert stages all over the world. Compositions by Michel van der Aa, Louis Andriessen's pupil, are also in great demand, but this season Cologne has an exclusive: the world premiere of his Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra (9 May).
