George Benjamin

George Benjamin is one of the few musicians of our times who is celebrated internationally in concert halls and opera houses not only as a composer but also as a conductor of famous orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and many others. The concerts in which Benjamin guests with Ensemble Modern as both composer and conductor include “Sept Haïkaï”, one of the most challenging compositions by his teacher Olivier Messiaen. He also remembers Pierre Boulez, who died in 2016: with his own “Palimpsests”, the first part of which was commissioned by the Kölner Philharmonie among others for Boulez's 75th birthday. Benjamin's chamber opera “Into the Little Hill”, his first music-theatre work, will be performed in Cologne in a concert version.
