Only when you've had the opportunity to stand in front of an orchestra and actually conduct can you appreciate what it takes to make sure the instrumentalists – often more than a hundred of them – are following you. Keeping an orchestra and the entire auditorium under your spell from the podium requires not only the greatest musicality but also a special charisma. The three female conductors appearing at the Kölner Philharmonie this season certainly have that charisma: Laurence Equilbey (29 September) and Emmanuelle Haïm (23 November) both from France, and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla (10 October) from Lithuania.
