American Sound

Meaningful or not, discussions about national identity are hard to avoid nowadays. One glance at the musical landscape in the USA, one of the world's most diverse nations, shows a picture that is far too complicated for simplistic attitudes. Only a tiny proportion of musicians based there can be heard at the Kölner Philharmonie, so it's all the more fascinating to experience the immense wealth and musical diversity that these high-profile representatives bring to their craft: the New York Symphony Orchestra (2 and 3 May), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (9 January), string quartets like the JACK Quartet (13 September) and the American String Quartet (12 March), conductors such as California-born Kent Nagano (20 October), jazz greats like Jason Moran from Houston, Texas (22 November) and native New Yorkers Eric Bibb (2 April) and Vijay Iyer (21 March), and artists who have chosen to live in New York such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma (19 October), pianist Daniil Trifonov (10 November) and clarinettist Kinan Azmeh (16 October).
