Sir George Benjamin is among the most original and successful opera composers of our times. He was the last student of Olivier Messiaen, who stated that Benjamin was a »great talent, similar to that of the young Mozart«. The British composer will conduct the performance of his most recent opera, »Lessons in Love and Violence«, a work that shifts »from earthy emotionalism to angelic purity« (The New York Times). »I like concert performances of operas,« says Benjamin, »because the orchestra can be seen and heard with greater clarity.« The international cast of vocalists brings glamour and vocal luxuriance to the stage, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is renowned for its cultured sound.
