Solo recitals with the pianist Elena Bashkirova, born in Moscow, are rare events and always a special occasion. Because she fears the loneliness of travelling alone, she generally prefers to play in a group (for example with the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, which she founded twenty years ago) or within the framework of a symphony. “I find recitals the most demanding,” she confessed recently in an interview with the taz: “For two hours you have to tell a story all by yourself, you have to concentrate and sustain the listener’s attention. It is as if you are naked and have to be creative from within yourself.” Once the expressive virtuoso decides to make a solo appearance, a demanding programme can be looked forward to. And so her Cologne programme also covers a considerable span: from the reveries and cheerfulness of Mozart to Schumann’s early romantic pathos and Dvořák’s late-romantic tone painting to Bartók’s refreshing adventurousness.
