Ever since his debut album appeared in 1997, Arcadi Volodos has been considered one of the greatest pianists of our time. He has repeatedly been named as the heir to Horowitz and the virtuoso culture of the 19th century. But Volodos is not merely a pyrotechnician, he is also a musician conveying immense expression. He has a particular affinity for the tender yet turbulent songs for piano by Franz Schubert. Along with the well-known Moments musicaux, Volodos will play a sonata existing only in fragmentary form which, with the addition of a Schubert Adagio, he presents as a four-movement wonder-work. After the interval he offers the full breadth of Russian tonal colours – from poetic to prestissimo – in works by Scriabin and Rachmaninoff.
