Any secrets hidden within the 88 keys on a concert grand, any undiscovered sound interferences, any concealed intimacy or expressivity, new things that Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Chopin might still be able to communicate to us today – all will be revealed by the eight solo artists performing on a period instrument or a modern piano in the Piano subscription series. Young live wires Benjamin Grosvenor and Jan Lisiecki join established virtuosos including the superbly sensitive Alexander Melnikov, the hugely accomplished Igor Levit and the fortepiano specialist Kristian Bezuidenhout. Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski plays Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. In his programme Herbert Schuch reunites Robert and Clara Schumann with their friend and admirer Johannes Brahms. The series ends with a majestic finale as the great Elisabeth Leonskaja performs the extravagantly beautiful final piano sonata by Franz Schubert, who died too young.
