- NO LONGER AVAILABLE-
The 'premium' label denotes excellence and a long tradition of mastery that is constantly reaffirmed. This and nothing less is promised by what are surely Europe's two most prestigious orchestras and by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, one of the 'big five' most distinguished orchestras in the United States. Add violinist Pinchas Zukerman, who brings supreme authority to every technical challenge, every expressive nuance and every area of the repertoire, and the 'premium' package is full to bursting. Speaking of quality assurances, the appearance of Kirill Petrenko also deserves a special mention. Performing a programme that reads like a tantalising visiting card, this Russian-born conductor who succeeded Sir Simon Rattle makes his Cologne debut in his new role as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Petrenko's soft spot for the post-war avant-garde is illustrated by Bernd Alois Zimmermann's mythically expressive ballet music Alagoana, and he devotes himself to two of his most significant compatriots with works by Stravinsky and Rachmaninov. These three concerts leave nothing to be desired. Premium deluxe!
