The only requirements might seem to be a tuneful melody hovering above sensuous harmonies and a balanced relationship between voice and accompaniment. Achieving that is hard enough, but in truth the demands of song composition are significantly greater. Art songs are self-contained, fully fledged linguistic works often based on fine poetry by writers like Schiller, Goethe or Mörike, Karl Kraus or Georg Trakl – verses with their own, distinct melody and rhythm that have to be retained and shaped whilst being incorporated into a coherent musical work. The musical aspects of the words and the compositional setting must interact, merging the two on a higher plane: language and music, linguistic meaning and musical content. Finding space for individual interpretations within this intricate fabric of internal references and fragile balances requires truly great art, fabulous voices and well-developed personalities. The singers performing in the coming season's popular Lieder Recitals subscription series are Matthias Goerne, Piotr Beczała, Katharina Konradi, Philippe Jaroussky, Christopher Maltman and Anna Lucia Richter.
