In 2016 Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla was appointed artistic director of the famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Even today female conductors are considered an exception but at the time this Lithuanian conductor was also extraordinarily young, aged only 29. What a phenomenal talent! Our guests from the great English industrial city perform works by British composers from the early to the late 20th century. In the other programmes, apart from Shostakovich's legendary Leningrad Symphony, the focus is very much on German-Austrian repertoire: Bruch and Bruckner, Mozart, Schubert and Mahler, Alban Berg and a Jörg Widmann piece hot off the press. The international prestige of this concert series derives from the orchestras' worldwide musical reputation rather than the distance they have travelled. In this respect, a relatively young ensemble like the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is right up there with the long-established orchestras from Munich, Leipzig, London and New York. This is international orchestral music of exceptional quality.
