Song is the link connecting this season's Divertimento concerts, which offer a foray through musical genres and eras that is as original and varied as ever. In addition to a jazz session with Thomas Quasthoff and Pe Werner accompanied by a German all-star combo, there's entertaining baroque music performed by distinguished solo singers and two of the world's most famous specialist ensembles. The choir and orchestra of Berlin's Komische Oper bring to Cologne an operetta by Hungarian composer Paul Abraham, who was banned by the Nazis. Taking hip hop back to its soul roots as part of his Colors project is Max Mutzke, whose break came when he represented Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004. Concluding the season in June, the versatile American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato performs a programme that condenses the broad spectrum of this series into a single evening. Baroque and classical songs, numbers from operas and musicals, from blues icon Leon Russell to jazz giants like Duke Ellington. All in sparklingly fresh arrangements for piano, double bass, drums and bandoneon. Ready for anything? Intrigued? Love music? Divertimento!
