With a distinguished line-up of vocal soloists, Les Talens Lyriques open this season's Baroque ... Classique concert series with La divisione del mondo by Italian composer Giovanni Legrenzi. Despite dating from 1675, this work appears astonishingly modern, commenting on consumer society and power-crazed rulers. But there are also purely musical interfaces between past and present, between early music and contemporary music. All over the world, young musicians in particular are fascinated by the opportunities offered by period instruments and historical performance practices. Some of the ensembles appearing in this subscription series were not founded until the 1990s or later. Even authentic sound pioneers such as Jordi Savall's Hespèrion XXI and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra have a history dating back less than five decades. They have revived the radiant expression of music's pulse, its 'speaking' rhetoric and its rich tone colours, giving listeners access to new spheres of sounds and experiences. Baroque … Classique – early music, now trending.
